Feminism (Via Straight White Man)

The first time I was called a feminist, I was in high school. I didn’t understand it then. Not because i didn’t know what feminism was (or at least i thought i understood it), but because the word was hurled at me like a racially charged insult.

One of my best friends had broken up with his girlfriend and was trying to stick his dick into anything he could (with some success). When he found out his ex-girlfriend was dating someone else, he went ballistic.

I asked him what the hell was wrong with him? He split up with her, he was fucking other women, why was he getting so pissed?

He told me to shut up, that i didn’t understand, and to stop being such a fucking feminist. I told him I didn’t think i was one really, that i just strongly disliked double standards. Followed by a moment of thought and then ‘Hell, if that makes me a feminist, fuck it. I am one.’

Yes, I am a feminist.
I’ve never used deragortory words towards women, no matter how frustrated or upset i get. I’ve never laid anything harsher than a loving (consensual!) hand on a woman. Hell, i don’t even try talking to a lot of women i might be interested in because I respect their space.

I am far from perfect. I am a man, have a penis and was raised by pop culture, meaning things in my head don’t always process properly right away with regards to women. But i try to be a person first, and a penis second. It’s still a process, but one that I know I have progressed in. I’ve always given guys around me a hard time when they fall into misogynistic double standards, and the results are usually the same. It must mean I’m gay, a pussy, or at the very least a condescending prick who is turning his back on his gender. This is usually followed by a last comment from me, “feminism doesn’t mean anti-male”, usually with a “moron or idiot”, added under my breath.
