we get real angry
when folks dumbfound us with their ignorance.
compassion though. compassion. us “enlightened” folks had to do work to become conscious enough to know and search for the truth.
when i go to colleges and universities to talk about the afrolatina identity, i have to remind myself that i had relaxed hair and was in complete denial of my africanness too. it’s just the “take a deep breath and patiently break it down to folks” moment that exercises the most amount of love. i understand the anger and hell, in some cases when people are being people, it is fully warranted and even important to put your foot in someone’s ass, but even i have to catch myself from missing the opportunity to help them shift. we don’t have to coddle anyone (please don’t!) but i realized this year that i can lose the chance to get through to someone if i start yelling immediately. again, some people do need to be yelled at to get it.
i just had to catch myself 5 seconds ago too. we get mad because we’re legit sad that folks continue to have a veil over their eyes, crafted masterfully by white capitalist patriarchal bullshit.
i get it fam. i get it.
